Cathedral Arts Tour

Since its inception, the Cathedral has played a historic role in supporting the arts. Explore the Cathedral's magnificent collection, which includes glorious stained glass windows, paintings, stonework, and 17th-century tapestries, as well as a triptych by Keith Haring and a memorial by Meredith Bergman.

Stained Glass Tour

All Ages

Experience the radiant stained glass windows of the Cathedral including the magnificent Rose Window, the largest in the United States, and the memorial to a stained glass artist. Each window contains a unique style of glass drawn from the English, French, and German traditions. Explore the beautiful narrative and geometric windows created by contemporary firms while learning about the history, creation, and meaning of stained glass.

Architecture Tour

Gaze upwards at ribs and vaults, columns and cornices, buttresses and beasts, prophets and pinnacles in this study of how successive styles of architectural history are reflected in the stages of Cathedral construction.

Vertical Tour

All Ages

On this adventurous, “behind-the-scenes” tour, climb more than 124 feet through spiral staircases to the top of the world's largest cathedral. Learn stories through stained glass windows and sculpture, and study the grand architecture of the Cathedral while standing on a buttress. The tour culminates on the roof with a wonderful view of Manhattan.

$16/person, $14 per college student/senior (ages 62 and up).

Architecture Workshop

All Ages

Experience the architectural process by employing the three architectural principles: stability, function, and beauty. With the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine as inspiration, use found and recycled materials to design and build a model of an original cathedral.

$200 flat rate for up to 20 participants.

Medieval Arts Workshop

All Ages

Discover the arts of the Middle Ages and of cathedral building. Carve a block of limestone; create an illuminated letter; sculpt a clay gargoyle; weave on a loom; make a brass rubbing; and design a stained glass collage.

The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine is dedicated to providing programs suited to the needs and interests of each group. Customized themed tours may include: Gardens and Grounds, the Middle Ages, Textile Conservation Lab visits, and Organ Demonstrations. Prices vary.

Choir Sings

Choirs make the historic relationship between music and cathedrals relevant and alive by performing in this symphony of stone and glass. Informal performances are held inside the Cathedral and resound amid its magnificent architecture, providing participants an opportunity to sing in a unique setting and in front of international audiences. You may also inquire about setting up an organ demonstration and tours to supplement your performance.
