The Cathedral Responds to Omicron in New York
Right now, New York City has joined a growing list of communities around the world facing a rampant surge in COVID cases, largely driven by the newly emergent and highly transmissible omicron variant. The unfortunate timing of this emergency has forced many of us to reconsider carrying out those holiday traditions we value most, including spending time amongst our families and loved ones. Here at the Cathedral, we too are cautiously weighing our previously planned winter and holiday activities. The time has come once again to put the needs and concerns of our wider community first, and adjust the details of our upcoming festivities and Services to best protect our congregants, clients, and visitors.
Out of an abundance of caution, and following guidance from New York City and federal health experts, this year’s Christmas services will move online. All are invited to join in the celebration of the Nativity on the Cathedral’s website, Facebook page, and YouTube channel.
On December 24, Christmas Eve, the Cathedral will livestream a Service of Lessons and Carols at 3:30 pm. The service will be streamed again at 10 pm on Christmas Eve, and at 10 am on Christmas Day, December 25.
On December 31, the New Year's Eve Concert for Peace will be livestreamed on our website, Facebook page, and YouTube channel at 7 pm. All ticketholders will be contacted to arrange either a full refund or a much appreciated donation to the Cathedral.
For the time being, our Midday Holy Eucharist Services are postponed.
In-person guided tours are paused temporarily, but keep an eye on our events calendar for information about upcoming virtual tours and programs.
The Cathedral will remain open daily for private prayer and meditation. Donations are welcome.
The Cathedral will continue to do what it has done throughout the entire pandemic, and that is step up to protect our most vulnerable community members. The CCC Clothing Closet and Soup Kitchen will remain in operation, providing life-saving services to our clients.
For those in need of COVID-19 testing or boosters, the Cathedral is hosting Prestige Health on the grounds. Prestige will administer free PCR testing, and will also offer rapid COVID antigen tests for $35. Vaccinations and boosters (Pfizer & Moderna) are available from Prestige on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Appointments are recommended. To register in advance, click here.
The past 20 months have been tiring, confusing, and difficult for all affected by this global pandemic. Each and every one of us has repeatedly been asked to make the most challenging decisions, and weigh sacrifices large and small. Throughout it all, the Cathedral has remained committed to providing our community with a haven for safe prayer, uplifting music, and solemn grief. As we move online once again, we hope you will continue to turn to the Cathedral for spirituality, engagement, and joy.
