Textile Conservation Lab - Our Process

Every object that comes to the Lab for treatment is carefully analyzed for its conservation needs. The goal of the Textile Conservation Lab is to preserve the integrity, provide stabilization and support, and minimize further deterioration of a piece.

  • Opening an object with client for initial condition observation

  • Preparing for a condition report and treatment proposal on object

  • Test for spot cleaning

  • Discussing conservation issues of a tapestry with interns and visiting students

  • Vacuuming a Moroccan carpet with a micro suction attachment

  • Sponging during wet cleaning treatment

  • Students working on a “conservation dye to match” exercise

  • Dyed yarns and their dye bath samples

  • Material and color matching for discrete restoration of areas of loss.

  • On Site; Examination of object in Collection Assessment Survey

  • On site; Collection Storage at the Memorial Art Gallery, Rochester, NY

  • Stitching a support backing to a tapestry

  • Inspecting a tapestry upon de-installation
