  • January 15, 2019 - 12:42 PM Team Spotlight: Textile Conservation Lab

Marlene Eidelheit, Director, Textile Conservation Laboratory As director of the Textile Lab since 1992, I’ve seen the Lab evolve and grow in various ways with the types of projects we do and how we may approach them. With our core of conservators and admin remaining steady for over the past 2 decades, we have maintained the mission of caring for the Cathedral’s precious possessions – the Barberini Life of Christ tapestry set made for a Pope and a related set of the Acts of the Apostles originally designed by Raphael for the Sistine chapel. In between we have been fortunate to work on other fantastic textiles—historic and contemporary—from other marvelous collections around the country. What is your favorite project you’ve worked on in the Textile Lab?T...

What is a typical work day? As a brand new Executive Director, I can definitely say there is no typical day: I am constantly growing, giving and grateful. ACT has eight incredible programs (summer camp, preschool, nursery school, one-to-one toddler classes, afterschool, parties, indoor play, and holiday/vacation camp) and working with the ACT program is a wonderful mix of interacting with young people of all ages, connecting with their families, supporting our diverse and exceptional full time staff, finding awesome part time and seasonal staff, and collaborating with ACT folks, Cathedral folks, community folks and the geniuses I have been lucky enough to know over the course of my educational career to dream up ways to make these strong youth programs even more awesome. (The only “typi...

What is a typical day here? I usually visit the two beehives once a week, often with a beekeeper friend. Our main concern is that bees are in good health, which requires constant vigilance and care. We open the hives and smoke the bees to pacify them. This allows us to go deep into the hives and check that the queen is laying eggs, that capped brood is abundant, and that the bees are assuming their many roles, such as housekeeper, nursemaid, construction worker, guard and bringing pollen and nectar into the hive. Once reassured all is well, we take a moment to watch and admire the fabulous Divine bees’ constant work before confirming we are in full compliance with New York City Health Department rules and regularities, like having a water source available by the hives. It is such a pri...

How do you learn about the Cathedral? What is your first memory of it? I visited the Cathedral for the first time on my very first trip to the USA, back in August 1996. I remember meeting the unique and ebullient organist of the time, Dorothy Papadakos, and being amazed by the instrument, even though at that time it wasn’t in such great shape. The console looked as though it had Chickenpox—many of the stops had little red dots stuck on them, which meant ‘these stops don’t work’. Since the magnificent restoration in 2007-8, performed by Michael Quimby and Associates, the organ has probably never been in better condition. Without a shadow of doubt, it is one of the very finest instruments in the world. Is there anything unique about the Cathedral compared to other places you have worke...

What is a typical work day? We’re here Sunday through Friday. There are three of us, so whoever gets here first opens up and checks in with security. Usually there are two or three people waiting either outside or in the Cathedral. They are looking for help with food stamps, housing, job referrals. They need a place to sleep or sometimes, especially now as the weather gets colder, a jacket. We have specific times our Clothing Closet is open for these services, but if we’re here we’re not going to turn someone away if they’ve made the trip here. If we don’t have what the person is looking for, we are a part of a great network of organizations up here so we know of the places that serve hot meals every day or can provide a bed and the other organizations know to send people to us for the...

What is a typical work day? Check emails. Check the Clergy and St. Martin’s sacristies and worship service areas to see that everything is in place. Check supplies. Check schedules. A lot of checking. What is your favorite event or ongoing program at the Cathedral? The Blessing of the Bicycles in the Spring. What is your favorite item in the Cathedral or on its grounds? The carving of Nelson Mandela. Who is your favorite peacock and why? Phil, because he is different. What is your experience with organized religion? I grew up in the Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa and was active throughout college and a few years after that but then drifted away for a while. When I came to the USA in 1986, I was not attending church until we were invited by friends to go to St...

What is a typical work day? It’s different everyday, which I love. Each group has unique needs whether they are elementary school students or senior center attendees. It’s my job to make sure they have the best experience we can offer which requires a lot of listening on my part. Groups visit more often in the morning so I’m often at the front doors answering questions about tour specifics or sometimes facilitating a program. In the afternoon I answer inquiries and work on booking staff to match the tours I register. What is your favorite event or ongoing program at the Cathedral? Enter the Conversation is a program I admire. Rabbis, Imams, and ministers from other Christian denominations, writers of note, etc. discuss difficult topics of our shared world. It’s really inspiring to s...
