A Conversation with Elaine Pagels, Siddhartha Mukherjee and Jonathan Rose followed by a concert by Jog Blues

Co-presented with The Garrison Institute

The Cathedral invites you to a conversation with Scholar in Residence Elaine Pagels and physician and best-selling author Siddhartha Mukherjee on the intersections of spirituality, culture, and the human experience, with Garrison Institute co-founder Jonathan Rose and The Right Reverend Clifton Daniel III, Dean of the Cathedral.

Following the conversation, Jog Blues, a group that brings together masters of Jazz, Blues and Indian Classical music in a 21st century mix, will perform.

This event is presented in conjunction with The Value of Sanctuary: Building a House Without Walls. Please join us at 7 pm to explore the exhibition. The conversation will begin at 8 pm and music at 9 pm.

Elaine Pagels is a preeminent academic whose impressive scholarship has earned her international respect. The Harrington Spear Paine Foundation Professor of Religion at Princeton University, Pagels was awarded the Rockefeller, the Guggenheim, and the MacArthur Fellowships. She is the author of The Gnostic Gospels, Beyond Belief, and Revelations. Her most recent book is Why Religion?

Siddhartha Mukherjee is the author of The Emperor of All Maladies: A Biography of Cancer, winner of the 2011 Pulitzer Prize in general nonfiction, and The Laws of Medicine. He is the editor of Best Science Writing 2013. Mukherjee is an assistant professor of medicine at Columbia University and a cancer physician and researcher. A Rhodes scholar, he graduated from Stanford University, University of Oxford, and Harvard Medical School.

Jonathan Rose is an American real estate developer, urban planner, author and musician. He is best known as a developer of affordable, environmentally responsible communities. Rose is also the founder of Gramavision Records, a jazz and new music label.

Jog Blues creates an experience drawing from deep traditions but swinging towards the future. The band is named for Jog, the Indian midnight raga, and the blues, the most American of music genres. Each of these musical traditions balance compositions and known forms with deep and exhilarating improvisations. They require the musicians to deeply listen to each other: what results is a journey into the suffering, joys and liberation of the human experience.

The band includes:
Ikhlaq Hussain – Sitar
Siddartha Mukherjee – Vocals
Andy Biskin – Clarinet, Bass Clarinet
Joel Bluestein – Electric Guitar
Jeffrey Zeigler – Cello
Jonathan Rose – Bass, Harmonica
Pheeroan ak Laff – Drums

The Garrison Institute’s mission is to apply the transformative power of contemplation to today’s pressing social and environmental concerns, helping build a more compassionate, resilient future.
