Overview
The North Site runs along 113th Street between Amsterdam Avenue and Morningside Drive. In March 2005, the Cathedral signed an option agreement with Columbia University to lease the land and build an academic facility at this location. The option, which has not been exercised, may extend up to eight years. To date there are no designs for buildings on the site.
No buildings on the campus will be demolished or altered as a result of this development.
Design
The Cathedral set strict development guidelines for what could
be built that were recorded in a Restrictive Declaration
with the City of New York. The Restrictive Declaration
insured that:
- The height of development is limited to the eave line
of the Cathedral (approximately 145 feet).
- Views
of the west façade, grand steps and north tower when approached
from Amsterdam Avenue are protected.
- Views of
the apse and chapels when approached from Morningside
Drive are protected.
- The footprint of the building
on its south side will be some 70 feet north
of the Cathedral.
- The structure will be reduced
in height at the portion of the site adjacent
to the North Transept.
Improvements to the Close
- The wide stairs in front of the Cathedral will be extended
north and lead to a new plaza the width of Lexington
Avenue between the Cathedral’s nave and the new building. The
plaza will be open to the public and provide access for the
disabled to the nave.
- The building and plaza will
replace metal sheds, a chain-link fence and parking.
- A
large terrace overlooking Morningside Park, open
to the public and accessible, will be created
on the east end of the site.
- The North Transept,
when rebuilt, will be open to the public and
accessible from 113th Street.
Updates
As of April 2007, there are no current plans to begin work on the North Site.
