Buildings and Buttresses

Investigate the architecture of medieval cathedrals, experience firsthand the role of flying buttresses, and explore the connection between the Cathedral's function and appearance. Optional Hands-on Activity: Build a model of a section of the Cathedral.

This program addresses the following New York State Learning Standards:

English Language Arts - 1, 3, 4   Math/Science/Technology - 1,  6, 7  

Social Studies - 1, 2   Arts - 3, 4

Architecture Workshop

Experience the architectural process by discussing and observing the Cathedral structure using the three architectural principles: stability, function, and beauty. With the Cathedral as inspiration, use found and recycled materials to design and build a model of an original            cathedral.
