Nelson Mandela, 1918-2013

DECEMBER 5, 2013

The Cathedral is deeply saddened by the news of Nelson Mandela's death. This son of South Africa belonged to the world, becoming one of its greatest global citizens in history. He taught us that "The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear. ” He graced our time with wisdom, compassion, dignity, and hope. He showed us how to forgive as he lived into the role of South Africa's first black President. His tireless efforts for peace and human rights inspired people and nations everywhere.

President Mandela said, “It always seems impossible until it’s done.” A political prisoner, sentenced to life behind bars—he emerged with humility and vision that widened our horizons and our capacity to dare to be great in the cause of justice. We thank God for–and will never forget–him.
