Cathedral Choristers
The Cathedral School
provides the choristers for the choir of the Cathedral Church
of St. John the Divine. Approximately 28 fourth through eighth
graders participate.
The Cathedral School chorister program began nearly 100 years
ago. A curriculum was developed by the foremost educators in
New York. As a result, it became possible for talented boys
to receive a superior academic as well as an outstanding musical
education. The students acquired a love of music and, in many
cases, a passion to perform.
Prospective choristers are auditioned by the choirmaster. The
school provides stipends for its choristers, in the form of
tuition reduction. Rehearsing three afternoons a week and singing
Sunday services, the choristers learn a large and varied repertoire
of sacred music.
Concerts and tours are also part of their experience; recent
tours have taken them to Washington, D.C., Florida and, in 1997,
a 14 day tour of Japan. In December of 1999, the choristers
performed on the "Today Show" and at the Metropolitan
Museum for Vogue's costume celebration. This past Spring, they
toured England and performed in St. Paul's and Canterbury Cathedrals.
