Adopt an Organ Pipe Program
By “adopting-a-pipe” you are helping to preserve
and support one of the Cathedral’s world-renowned
treasures, the Great Organ. Built in 1911 by Ernest Skinner
and substantially enlarged and rebuilt in 1952 by the Aeolian
Skinner Organ Company, the Great Organ is a truly magnificent
instrument with over 8,000 pipes and 141 ranks. The
musical effect produced by the Great Organ is as grand
as the cathedral itself.
Unfortunately, due to the fire in the North Transept in
2001, the voice of the Great Organ has been silent. Cleaning
and conservation work is nearly complete having been funded
in part by the generous gifts of individuals who have contributed
their support to this program.
However, it will require more for the Great Organ return
to its home in the Cathedral. Substantial maintenance and
repairs to the Cathedral roofing systems must be completed
so that the newly restored Great Organ can be safely reinstalled
in the Cathedral.
Your generous gift to the Adopt-A-Pipe program will help
to make the return of the newly restored Great Organ possible
and will insure that others will be able to enjoy its power
and majesty for many years to come.
With each “adoption” you will receive an official
certificate of recognition signed by the Cathedral’s
organist AND also the knowledge that you have helped preserve
part of the Cathedral’s celebrated musical tradition.
