AUGUST SPECIALTY CAMPS:
|
*see calendar for exact dates
Age requirement: 5 and 6 years old and going into kindergarten
in September
With preschool needs clearly in mind, the program of activities
for this group focuses on athletic pursuits. Specialists aid campers
in exploring the skills and coordination needed to succeed in traditional
sports such as soccer and T-ball. The traversing climbing wall increases
confidence and mastery of body motion while exercise routines develop
strength and endurance along with life long habits. Strategic play
reinforced through cooperative games highlights the importance of
team play initially through pairing activities and triple teams.
The games played by campers are traditional but are modified to
increase practice time. Successful attempts rather than team outcomes
are the primary focus. Campers begin the day in a classroom at the
Cathedral School and quickly move to play areas on the Cathedral
close. They sometimes play games with older students, depending
on their familiarity with rules and strategies. Traditional activities
such as rest-time, playground time, snack and lunch take place throughout
the day.
Fitness and exercise is the common thread of activities on land
and in water. From morning stretches, exercise, am jogs and swim
periods to afternoon drills, sports and games campers are trained
to develop healthy habits. Designing their own team uniforms and
learning to make special fruit drinks are some of the many activities
that encourage self respect and appreciation for team work and fair
play.
Anchored to two counselors throughout the day, campers join new
found friends to follow a trail of creative adventures mapped out
on a weekly schedule. Stops include visits to the nature crafts
center and the art room where they use various mediums and found
objects to present ideas and images in multi-dimensional form. Along
the way they’ll have lunch and recess on our beautiful campus that
includes our own playground. Choice offerings provide optional activities
such as medieval jewelry design to clay gargoyle sculpting. To round
out their experience, campers go on a bus trip, swim, have gym periods,
play lawn games and try an acting class.
Just as many of us did in college, third - ninth graders can develop
their own schedule from over thirty sports and arts courses. Campers
are encouraged to explore fields of interest and dabble a bit. Courses
are age-specific and offered during each of four daily periods.
Students must select and indicate first and second choice courses
for each of the four periods. The course selection form (available
in June) must be returned immediately. If a camper's first or second
choices cannot be met, students are notified by phone. Schedules
of courses chosen by each camper will be available the first day
of the August Session.
AfterCamp (See Holiday Camp Program for
details and schedule)is an interim program offered between the
end of August camp and the beginning of school. Flexible enrollment
allow families back from or preparing to go on vacation to enroll
for less than five days on a need-to basis. Everyone can enroll
for the full week if they wish. AfterCamp features a wide variety
of single day experiences strung around a theme or trip.

FESTIVAL DAY: Festival Day is traditionally held on
the Thursday before specialty camps camp end. Everyone eagerly
participates in preparations for the arrival of friends and
families who come to witness the fruits of each student's
labor. Art exhibits, sports demonstrations, and performances
are held throughout the day on the 13 acre oasis of the Cathedral.
NOONTIME occurs daily after lunch. "Noontime"
is often combined with lunch and serves as an opportunity
for everyone to meet outdoors and share in skills, talents
and games. Presentations are made by students, staff and special
guests.
