6-9 GRADES
An interview with camp director is required in order to ensure that
this is the right program for you and that you are the right candidate
to be a Pioneer.
Make the difference! Turn a boring summer of pre-packaged
programming into your own special experience. Work with peers to
develop a five week summer experience you’ll be sure to enjoy. Past
groups have developed and participated in:
- swimming,
traditional sports, arts activities, unique group challenges;
- trip
to Mountain Creek Water Park, Rye Playland Park, New Roc City
games;
- in-town
trip to bowling alleys, arcades and movies;
-
visit to city beaches, nearby lakes, baseball game, special NYC
attractions;
- and
hang-out on the Cathedral campus to join in camp events and happenings.
Basket ball courts, batting cage, table tennis, traversing wall,
gymnasiums, art studios and more are available on campus. Help
plan an action packed 3 day camping trip. Past camping trip events
have included, evening storytelling, a Murder Mystery Party, tubing
down the Esophus River, make-believe gladiator arena, Casino Night,
wilderness challenges, touch football/softball games, hiking,
sunning and swimming at a lake.
Junior and Senior group of Pioneers work with counselors
to create a schedule of activities and events for the five-week
session. Through cooperative learning activities, challenges and
their own ideas, Pioneer develop self-esteem, leadership skills
and take responsibility for their camp day. Campers have great latitude
to develop activities that appeal to them. They plan their own schedule
of trips and activities in addition to swimming, art and sport periods
on the camp schedule.
The group receives a budget for ancillary expenses since they often
leave the grounds to visit Reis Beach, Yankee Stadium or South Street
Seaport. Counselors guide discussions, the group's decision-making
process, and mediate as needed. Pioneers quickly learn to adapt
to program expectations. Pioneers must work cooperatively, commit
to resolve conflicts, share in the decision making process, embrace
new experiences, work with co-ed and mixed-grade campers and accept
responsibility for their day. Pioneers are offered options to participate
in camp-wide events or to select their own A.C.T.ivities. They are
free to use the many facilities and resources New York City offers
as well as those available on the campgrounds.
Camping Trip:
The Pioneers will leave on a camping trip
in mid-July. Trip plans are yet to be determined. An additional
fee is required to help defray trip expenses. The additional fee
is payable the week prior to the trip.
